The Montana Watercourse offers tours, trunks, workshops and professional development opportunities for K-12 educators, non-formal educators, naturalists, troop leaders and any other educator. See our pamphlet explaining why we use water in professional development.

Water monitoring is a valuable activity to connect your students to their local waterways and give them a chance to practice data collection and using the scientific method. Guides and handbooks are available to give educators activities to integrate water monitoring into their science lesson plans.

If you or your school system would like to participate in Project WET or begin water monitoring, a workshop can be designed especially for you! OPI renewal units or university credit can be earned in many WET or monitoring professional development workshops. Please contact us for more details or to arrange a workshop date or check out our calendar of events to learn about upcoming workshops and events.

Sean Sullivan: Winner of the 2008 Water Teacher of the Year Award

The Water Teacher of the Year award, presented annually at the Montana Environmental Education Association (MEEA) Conference, recognizes an individual who fosters a sense of wonder about water and its unique qualities, and who empowers students to be water stewards.  This year’s award was presented to Sean Sullivan at the MEEA awards banquet in Helena on March 14.

Sean, currently an Invertebrate Taxonomist for Rhithron Associates in Missoula, embodies the qualities of a dedicated educator who has positively impacted the water knowledge of countless students in Missoula and surrounding schools. Whether working with elementary or college students, or community members, Sean is an educator in the true sense as he captivates learners through science, stories and humor.  Sean is in his element as he connects the watery world of aquatic critters’ health, to the impacts of water quality and quantity, human impacts, and the aspects of the entire watershed.

Prior to his work with Rhithron Associates, Sean served as the Program Director for Watershed Education Network from 2001-2006.  During this time period he was engaged in coordination of trainings and field trips for 30 middle school classrooms, worked on curriculum development, lead volunteer stream monitoring in Western Montana, and played a key role in developing a stream monitoring training video, “What’s Up Your Creek? – A guide to stream monitoring in Western Montana.”

Sean has volunteered countless hours as a water steward educator through community service in various organizations.  His involvement includes, in part:  Montana Project WET - facilitator; Montana Volunteer Monitoring Program – advisory board; Clark Fork Watershed Education Program – advisory board; Missoula City / County Water Quality Advisory Council – member; Montana Environmental Education Association – vice-president Executive Board.

Whether holding a paddle, water quality testing equipment, microscope, or the rapt attention of those he is teaching, Sean is at home in the world of water.  Montana Watercourse joins Dr. Vicki Watson, U of M Environmental Studies Professor, who nominated Sean, in congratulations.   Thank you for your dedication to water and education, Sean!

River of Words: The River of Words competition is a wonderful opportunity to introduce your students to the definition of a watershed, and it is also a fabulous excuse to get your students outside observing their natural world. This is an international art and poetry contest for K-12 grade students. Educator guides and workshops are available. 2008 entries are due February 15, as they are each year. Posters are available for teachers and non-formal educators.

For more information about this year’s contest, and to register, please go to the River of Words website: www.riverofwords.org
